I love to eat. Change that. I love to taste. Experiencing flavor, not just consuming food, is a joy. I do not need a huge meal to be satisfied, what I do need is a sensation.
I love to talk about food with other people who love food. I love to taste all the exciting tastes when I travel. I love to eat at home.
Tonight we had Chicken Tikka Masala, a traditional Indian dish full of intense flavor. We did not make it from a jar with the add-your-own-chicken directions on the label. We made it from scratch. My daughter went to India earlier this year and brought back spices. The pleasure of the food made the family meal an event. We ate slowly, savoring each bite. We talked about the food and about India – the combination of flavors and the conversation makes dinner fun.
Nearly every meal in our home is an event. Yes, there are nights of simplicity and there are even nights where everyone does their own thing. But, most nights are taste sensations and we share them together. We may have pork sauerbraten and potatoes. We may have salmon fried up with bacon and lemon, served with a salad of lettuce, feta cheese, cucumbers, and avocado. The flavors of travel, or an experiment of tastes, create happiness around meal time. It pulls us closer together as a family and makes our meals pleasurable. I savor every bite.
