We complain at a high level. The maid dropped a glass, I have a broken nail but my nail lady has the flu, one of our rentals has been vacant for a month, and private school tuition has gone up again.
Are you hungry? I mean truly hungry? No food, and no possibility of food, for days at a time? Do you have a place to sleep? What kind of war zone do you live in?
There is so much to be grateful for, so little to complain about. Even when times are tough, they are not as tough as we think. We have the most to complain about because we have the most. We have First World Problems.
As I think about my own life, I think about how much my family has to be grateful for. We have a roof over our heads. Not just any roof, our roof. We have furniture, dishes, toys, and books. We live in one of the most beautiful places in the world. There is food in the refrigerator, the house is warm. We have a car, a luxury SUV, with gas in it. Our daughter is in college. I am writing this on a computer, we have five, not including our phones. We have lots of friends and a huge extended family.
Yes, things can be hard. We deal with health issues, we deal with financial issues, and we deal with our aging parents. It is our perspective that makes it hard. We compare to where we want to be – that unknown place off at the horizon. The horizon moves. No matter where we are, we look to the horizon as our goal but we cannot get there.
Today I am happy for this moment in time. Right now, right this very minute, life is good.
