Creativity and Art

We are all creative, we are all artists. Some people’s creativity is traditional, they are painters or musicians or photographers, but there are multiple types of creativity and art. Sales is a creative endeavor. Understanding needs and finding ways to fill them takes creativity. True sales is about listening and observation, both a part of the creative process. The art of salesmanship.

Lately I have noticed great creativity in the trades. Plumbers, electricians, and mechanics. I see how excited they are about what they do. Recently a plumbers showed me how he was fixing a waste and over-flow valve; you know the ones in a tub that keep you from filling it too far? He showed why it wasn’t working before and what he was doing to fix it. He explained that most plumbers would not see what he was seeing, it was not obvious but it was common. When the job was done, he stepped back to admire the work. He filled the tub and stepped back again. Art. Creativity.

The electrician who walked back and forth in front of the wall, listening to the buzz was creative. He opened a plug on the lower wall, reattached some wires, and the buzz was gone. The mechanic who gently moved a belt so it would stop rubbing and making a funny noise. Both of these professionals are creative, too.

What are you doing to keep your creativity up and running? Bring out the artist within, you know it’s there.
