As a child I was taught that the opposite of love is hate. When looking up the word love in a thesaurus, my childhood teachings are confirmed. The most common antonym for love is hate although dislike, ill will, enmity, and animosity occur as well.
As I got older, I came to believe that the opposite of love was indifference. This antonym shows up in the thesaurus further down the list, as a lesser antonym. Love is a strong emotion, so is hate, but indifference is a lack of emotion.
Today I believe that the opposite of love is fear. When there is love, fear cannot exist. When looking up love in the thesaurus, fear is not on the list of antonyms. So, I looked up fear. The thesaurus says that the opposite of fear is bravery. I disagree. Bravery is walking through fear, it is not the opposite of fear.
As I look down the list, to the lesser antonyms for fear, I find the word love. As I look down the list for the lesser antonyms of love, fear is absent.
Coincidence? I don’t think so. When there is love, fear is absent.
