This is a snow flower. Its scientific name is Sarcodes sanguinea. It does not use photosynthesis since it is actually a parasite, receiving nutrients from fungi that attach to tree roots. When I was a young girl there were dozens of them between my home and school. So far this year, I have only seen one so I took a photo. They are endangered, probably because people want to transplant them. Since they need their host to survive, they don’t survive being transplanted. If you see one, please take pictures but don’t take the plant.
