Conversations With Meals

Conversations with friends are best at lunch. The flavors and thoughts flow gently and freely when my pals and I eat together. We solve the problems of the world and we encourage each other. There’s lots of laughter, we interrupt the other tables as we get louder in our enthusiasm, and the laughter stays with me as we hug and head to our cars.

Conversations with the family are best over dinner. We talk about our day, unwind, and make plans for the future. It’s our time. I hear of many families that don’t have dinner together, all going in different directions. For us, it is an almost nightly ritual. After dinner we clean up together and I hold on to the closeness for the rest of the evening.

Conversations over breakfast? Not really. My husband and I drink our coffee, with that unspoken conversation of people who have loved each other a long time. We sit quietly as our daughter gets ready for school, relaxing and enjoying the moment. We may mention one thing or another but mostly we have the comfortable silence of love.
