My Cousin

Today I called my cousin, Gina. We connect on Facebook but it has actually been years since we spoke, voice to voice. When we were little we were together all the time. Our dads are brothers and we lived a few blocks apart. I always believed that Gina was born to be my playmate and best friend, she arrived in the world just nine months after I did. As we got older the families moved further and further apart so it was holidays and birthdays and times in between, but not as often as every day. As we became adults it was weddings, the birth of my daughter, and parent created events like family reunions. It’s been over four years since the last two times we saw each other, one was her dad’s funeral and a bit later it was my dad’s funeral. I miss her and for some reason I have missed her a ton these past few weeks.

Gina cares about every worm, every bug, every living thing. She loves, loves, loves her dogs. Gina has rescued animals of all sorts from injured birds to rabbits. Each and every creature of the earth has her as their guardian. We called her Gina-Bug, I always think of her bug as a ladybug. I remember her gathering them from the water’s edge and bringing them back to the grass so they would be safe.

Gina has truly followed her passion. She started doing it as a volunteer, because she felt it was the right thing to do. She did not think about how she was going to make money, she just wanted to take care of the life she saw around her. Today her passion has turned into a business but that does not stop it from being so important that she would do it anyway.

Our conversation today was all about following our passions. Gina had some wonderful insight for my journey and I hope I was able to give in return. I want us to get together in person, I am not waiting for a funeral. I want to spend time with my cousin for no reason at all.
