Yesterday I did a long drive. I left my house a little after lunch, drove four and a half hours, had dinner to celebrate a friend’s birthday, and drove home. The drive home was quicker, only three and a half hours, since there was no more traffic. Was it worth it? Yes. It was great to see my friend and to meet her other guests. I knew we would only have a short time together – she had other plans for the following morning, and was working beforehand. I was happy to have our three hours. So many people asked me why I did not stay the night. I was not tired, and the drive would have to happen anyway. I may as well start the drive after dinner instead of waiting until after breakfast the next day. Why stay over? It is not like we would have had additional time together to catch up. Driving in the car is also meditative. There are no electronics, and no radio or music player if I desire to keep it off. I can think, I can daydream, I can plan. The last hour, when I am truly tired, is hard, but it is also fun. I open the window and sing.
