Is This Success?

The perfect job. She is so excited. She has worked for this most of her life. She was told to pursue her dreams. Set a goal and you can achieve it. Anything is possible. Dream it, do it! If you work hard enough, you will succeed. She dreams, she works hard. She applies for the job.

There were over 10,000 applications. The company discarded over 8,000. The remaining 2,000 candidates were sent a questionnaire. She made the cut, she answered the questions along with 1,816 others. The company pared it down to their favorite 500. She made it again! The 500 were requested to submit a You Tube interview, answering ten questions. Over 450 You Tube videos were reviewed, including our gal. The best 200 were given real, face to face interviews. She got an interview. Not everyone could make it, they had to spend their own money to get to the interview, but over 150 arrived for a three day event. She flew several thousand miles, thanks to a gift from her dad. This was the biggie, only 50 were to be hired. She went home, not knowing. She prayed. She thought positive thoughts. Two weeks later she received a letter. She made it! She got her dream job beating out thousands of hopefuls.

Is this a success story? For her, yes. What about candidate 51? When you almost made the final 50, but don’t get the job, did you fail? She was told to pursue her dreams, too. Set a goal and you can achieve it. Anything is possible. Dream it, do it! If you work hard enough, you will succeed. Did candidate 51 not work hard enough? Did she not dream big enough? In our world of positive platitudes, when things don’t work out, it is easy for people to quit believing in themselves, quit dreaming, quit trying.

It is the pursuit that is the prize, it is the dream that is important. The results, they are not predictable. They are not in our control. Candidate 51 is not a failure. Chance plays a role and chance is fickle. To Candidate 51 and to all the others who worked for their dream, I applaud you. You are winners. When you shoot for the moon and miss, you still land among the stars.

Very insightful and encouraging. It is important to put things in perspective. Thanks for reminding us we’re not failures if we don’t survive someone’s final cut. What’s important is to keep believing in ourselves and learn, as corny as it sounds, to be our own best friend. The last thing we need to do is beat ourselves up. What good will come of that?
